Love Culture #12 Affirmation

Words of affirmation is one of the five love languages. Although its a big need for people who primarily speak that language, we all have need for affirmation in differing degrees. My years of counseling and psycho-social support have proven that men tend to have a deeper need for affirmation than women. Unfortunately most men I have interacted with act as if they don’t need any affirmation and yet it is a deep need for them. That with standing, women also have a need for affirmation and it differs from one person to another.
An affirmation is really anything you say or think. A lot of what we normally say and think is quite negative and doesn’t create good experiences for us. We have to retrain our thinking and speaking into positive patterns if we want to change our lives. The ability to affirm others can only be developed as we learn to affirm other people. By changing what we say to ourselves, it will become easy to affirm others because it flows from who are.
Every thought you think and every word you speak is an affirmation. All of our self-talk, our internal dialogue, is a stream of affirmations. You’re using affirmations every moment whether you know it or not. You’re affirming and creating your life experiences with every word and thought.
Most people repeat in their minds negative words and statements concerning the situations and events in their lives, and consequently, create undesirable situations. Words work at both ways, to build or destroy. It is the way we use them that determines whether they are going to bring good or harmful results.
The greatness of the human mind is that it can think and imagine what does not exist right now. It can envision situations and circumstances that are different from the current reality, and in this way create better situations and circumstances.
By focusing frequently on certain thought or affirmation, you make it an important part of your life, and will you therefore, start acting and behaving in such a way, so to make it come true. Be intentional about believing and thinking the best of all people. It has nothing to do with reality, it has everything to do with intentional living.
People thrive when they are affirmed no matter their short comings. The easiest way to transform a person is through regular positive affirmation. People become what we declare them to be. By choosing to positively affirm people, you nurture them to be the best that they can be.
The world can be a much better place if we all choose to be positive and to be generous with our affirmation. We don’t have to wait for huge achievements to affirm and praise people but rather we can start by being intentional in taking note of the small sacrifices and milestones accomplished on a daily basis. Loving people comes with learning to affirm them regularly.
